Frequently Asked Questions
1) Who are Voices of Corangamite and what do they do?
Voices of Corangamite is a grassroots community group made up of local residents who believe our federal political system is no longer working for everyday people. Our current Member of Parliament does not represent us – she represents her party. When it comes to votes on crucial issues like new fossil fuel projects, she follows the party line, even if it goes against the clear wishes of our community.
For example, 89% of Australians want stronger climate action. Yet both major parties continue to take millions in donations from the fossil fuel industry and support projects that accelerate the climate crisis. Our democratic system, designed to represent people, has been compromised by powerful industry interests.
So what do we do? We organise kitchen table conversations, town hall events, forums, and film nights – all focused on listening deeply to local concerns. We support independent, values-driven candidates who will truly represent the people of Corangamite in Parliament.
2) What values inspired the creation of this group?
The group was formed five years ago out of frustration with party politics that often puts party loyalty and self-interest ahead of community wellbeing. We are guided by values like:
- Integrity and transparency
- Climate responsibility
-
Gender equality
-
Active listening
-
Community empowerment
This is part of a national movement of over 38 Community Independent candidates working to restore integrity and bring community voices back to the heart of democracy.
3) What is the role of women in politics and climate action?
Women – especially mothers – often bring honesty, clarity, and courage to cut through the spin and misinformation peddled by powerful lobby groups. The female Community Independents already in Parliament have shown inspiring leadership – marked by collaboration, long-term thinking, and genuine connection with community.
These qualities are essential in tackling the climate crisis. Women are leading the way in climate advocacy, and must be central to shaping a just and sustainable future. According to a global survey of 77,000 people, conducted by University of Oxford, in Australia, 10 percentage points more women than men want their government to act on climate. Climate safety is not just an environmental issue – it's a human rights and justice issue.
4) What are you hearing from people in the community?
The number one message is this: people are tired of being ignored. They care deeply about:
-
The rising cost of living
-
Access to healthcare and affordable housing
-
Stronger climate action
-
Integrity and honesty in politics
The latest Climate of the Nation 2024 report shows that 64% of Australians support transitioning away from fossil fuels by 2026. There’s a real hunger for leadership that listens and acts – without spin, excuses, or party games.
5) Why support an Independent? Can an Independent really make a difference?
Absolutely. Independents in Parliament are not bound by party politics. They can prioritise their communities, ask tough questions, and push for accountability. We've already seen how the current group of Community Independents has made a real impact – advocating for transparency, stronger climate policy, and a respectful tone in political debate.
Supporting an Independent is about restoring trust and making democracy work again – from the ground up.
6) What’s the opportunity if Australia ends up with a ‘hung’ parliament?
A so-called ‘hung’ parliament – where no party holds an outright majority – is actually a chance for better democracy. In countries like Denmark, minority governments are the norm, and they rely on negotiation, compromise, and collaboration.
In Australia, Independents can bring that same spirit: breaking through gridlock, encouraging fresh ideas, and holding governments to account. It’s a real opportunity to focus on practical solutions over party politics.
7) What does success look like for Kate Lockhart’s campaign in Corangamite?
Success is about more than just winning a seat. It’s about energising our community, building trust, and proving that politics can work when people come first.
A successful campaign listens more than it talks. It invites people in, and it shows what’s possible when we come together.
This campaign won’t be won with corflutes and newspaper ads alone. It will be won through conversations, social media, and community connection. Everyone can play a part – by sharing posts, attending events, talking to friends, or volunteering.
8) Is Voices of Corangamite a political party?
No. Voices of Corangamite is a non-partisan, community-led group. We do not align with any political party. Our role is to listen to the community and help amplify its voice – particularly by supporting independent candidates who reflect our shared values and concerns.
9) How can I get involved?
There are many ways to get involved:
-
Join a kitchen table conversation
-
Attend an event or forum
-
Volunteer your skills – whether it's social media, organising, or design
-
Help spread the word by talking to friends, family, and neighbours
-
Donate to support our campaign efforts
The movement grows with every voice that joins. This is your democracy. Let’s reclaim it – together.
